Meet

Serena Kaur Barringer

I am a classically trained lyric soprano and pianist with a B.A. degree in music, summa cum laude, from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. I sing opera and art songs in multiple languages, as well as musical theatre, jazz, and pop. I also write and compose original music, which is my greatest passion alongside teaching!

I have 18 years of experience in childcare and working with young children and teens. I am a patient and compassionate teacher who believes in every student's growth. I cultivate an encouraging environment that emphasizes constructive learning in which students are challenged but inspired to achieve attainable goals. I provide students with a strong classical foundation as well as the tools to be a critical thinker both artistically and culturally. I view creativity and improvisation as essential to the learning process and since each student is unique, I tailor lessons to their learning style and personal goals!

Ms. Barringer, 29, is originally from the Detroit area of Michigan but has lived in the Lake Norman area of North Carolina for most of her life. For high school, she attended the independent K-12 Woodlawn School, where she graduated with honors in 2013. She earned the Creative Arts Award for her multiple curricular and extracurricular involvements. While attending Woodlawn School, she starred in the leading role of Woodlawn's first musical Snow White & the Seven Buskers, written/directed by Jeff Donnelly with musical direction by Sandi Wilson. Ms. Barringer trained in piano with artist-associate of Davidson College and member of the Steinway Teacher Hall of Fame Cynthia Lawing. In piano competitions through the Charlotte Piano Teachers Forum (CPTF) and the North Carolina Music Teachers Association (NCMTA), Ms. Barringer earned "excellent" and "superior" marks. She also trained in ballet and jazz dance at Queen City Youth Ballet with Erika Lindblom-Bennett, alum of the Draper Center in Rochester, NY, and has studied several styles of ballroom and Latin dance.

In May 2020, Ms. Barringer graduated summa cum laude from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte with a B.A. in Music, concentrating in voice. She studied opera, art songs, and musical theatre works ranging from German and French to Italian, Latin, and Spanish, which she is fluent in as a second language. She also enjoys singing jazz and pop. She has studied with several prestigious teachers, including Christina Pier, soprano, voice professor at UNC-Charlotte, & 2003 Grand Finals Winner of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, Ilana Lubitsch, soprano, winner of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Central Regional Auditions, & voice professor at Davidson College, Dr. Ellen Williams, mezzo-soprano & retired voice professor of Meredith College, Timothy Sparks, tenor & voice professor at UNC-Chapel Hill, and Dr. Evangelia Leontis, soprano & voice professor at Keene State College.

Throughout her college career, she also pursued her passion for Women & Gender Studies and social-justice education. She is in the process of writing and composing a multigenerational musical drama entitled WOMEN I INHERIT, based on her female ancestors of Indian, Polish, and English heritage. It illuminates their agonizing struggles behind closed doors and staggering achievements that will forever impact the lives of the women who survive them.

In Spring 2020, she composed the song "I Hear Voices" for the new-music ensemble SPACEPANTS, featuring mezzo-soprano Jennifer Beattie and violist Diana Wade. They premiered the piece at the virtual 2020 Charlotte New Music Festival, for which Ms. Barringer served as the Administrative Intern and Composition Liaison. In August 2020, she was selected as a semi-finalist by voice & flute duo Anima Vox for her composition "Divina," featuring Spanish text from Sor Juana de la Cruz's 17th-century poem "Divina Lysis Mia."

Ms. Barringer continues to write and record her original songs spanning a variety of personal and political issues. Her vocal and songwriting influences include Alicia Keys, Norah Jones, Fiona Apple, Ray Charles, Nat King Cole, Madeleine Peyroux, Nina Simone, Aretha Franklin, Ella Fitzgerald, Liz Phair, Jewel, Kelly Clarkson, Whitney Houston, Stevie Wonder, Julie Andrews, Barbra Streisand, Audra McDonald, and Maria Callas.
